Make the Most of your Commute

How to (Safely!) Make the Most of Your Commute

The average American spends 25.4 minutes commuting to work each day, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This means each day, they spend almost an hour in the car just going to and from their job. We all know that time is precious, so how can we make the most of our commute (in a safe and responsible way)? Here are some ideas to inspire you.

1. Look for a vehicle with bluetooth options. If you aren’t in the market for a new vehicle, you can also look into add-on bluetooth options online. They vary in price but can be fairly inexpensive for a simple version. Having a hand-free option can eliminate distractions if you receive a phone call or need directions.

2. Keep your mind active with audiobooks. The market is saturated with audiobooks (educational, fiction, etc.) that you can listen to while sitting bumper to bumper on the freeway.

3. Find a satellite radio station that you’re interested in. There are different channels for everything you can think of including talk shows, sports, comedy, and more. It’s like television for the mind! If you’re picking up the kids from school or daycare and have them on your commute as well, find a station that tells kids stories to keep them quiet, engaged and relaxed.

4. Make a ‘good mood CD’ to play on bad days. Putting together a mix of music that you love can completely change your mood by the time you get to your destination. On long days at the office, it can transform the evening you have ahead of you, and instead of carrying the stress home you can leave it at the office.

5. Find a podcast station to keep you sharp. There are plenty of options when it comes to podcasts which you can listen to through your radio audio jack and your smart phone. It can be anything from learning a new language, nutritional tips, cleaning and organizing ideas, career insight from industry professionals, and many more. Choose your selections based off commute time so that you’re not distracted by having to change the channel.

There is much to be made with your time spent in your car each day! Utilize your time in a safe way to make your day more productive.
