15 Tips for Test Driving at a Dealership

Test driving a vehicle is a fun and exciting experience, but there are a few things you should know before you drive off the lot for the first time.

  1. Don’t forget to bring your license and insurance information with you.
  2. If you have children in car seats, bring car seats with you to ensure they fit the new vehicle.
  3. Clean your current vehicle before you go – just in case you need a trade evaluation.
  4. Know how to control the vehicle before you begin. Locate the dash controls, lights, windshield wiper, etc.
  5. Adjust the mirrors on the vehicle.
  6. Wear a helmet to scare your salesperson (optional – teasing)
  7. Start the vehicle yourself. If the salesperson starts it for you, turn it off, complete steps 1-4, and restart the car yourself (this is especially important when shopping for pre-owned vehicles)
  8. Pay attention to the way the vehicle sits/engine noise while idling.
  9. Get out and take a look under the hood before you drive off the lot. The engine should sound and look smooth while in motion. Be concerned if you notice anything out f the ordinary/violent rocking, etc.)
  10. Before leaving the lot, know where you will drive. You should experience in-town and highway driving. (Maintain highway speeds for a few minutes before returning – in areas legally permitted).
  11. Check the breaks in areas with no traffic (warn your salesperson first). The vehicle should not pull to the left or right when you break swiftly.
  12. Drive slowly with the driver’s window down for a few moments to listen for anything unusual (ticking, tire noise, etc.)
  13. Be polite to the salesperson while avoiding unnecessary conversation. This may distract you from flaws you should be alert to.
  14. When you return to the dealership, park in a new location that is free of oil stains so you can see if the vehicle is leaking any fluids.
  15. Ask questions before leaving the vehicle. When you are done, check the ground for new fluid leakage.
